Following his graduation from Ulster University, Stephen commenced his career in England working for one of the large multi-disciplinary practices, before returning to Northern Ireland, joining a local consultancy as a mechanical engineer. In 1996 he co- founded ISD with the goal of providing mechanical and electrical design solutions that were not only of a high technical quality but also focused on the aesthetics and impact of the installations on the building, but also considered the cost, establishing realistic budgets from the concept stage. When ISD became a limited company in 2000, he took on the role of Managing Director, a position he still holds.
In 2009 Stephen was elected Treasurer for the Association of Consulting Engineers (NI) and held this position for 3 years. During this period he also represented ACE on the Construction Industry Group in Northern Ireland.
In his spare time Stephen is a keen walker and an enthusiastic allotment holder.
Cathal graduated from Ulster University, commencing his career in a number of local consultancy practices. In1996 he co-founded ISD. He specialises in the area of electrical engineering. Cathal maintains a hands-on approach to project delivery. He leads ISD’s team on a number of local Healthcare Frameworks, providing the highest levels of client care throughout projects forming long lasting relationships.
Outside of work, Cathal is a keen DIY & garden enthusiast. Having enjoyed some success in his early years as an accomplished gaelic player, Cathal is a strong supporter of his local gaelic club where he coaches a number of the underage teams.

Starting his career at an early age as an electrical draughtsman in a local consultancy, he is now a highly experienced electrical engineer. In 2000 he joined ISD as a senior electrical engineer and became a director of the company in 2001. A passionate engineer, he has established strong working relationships across the industry, in particular within the education sector where he has led ISD’s team on numerous projects.
In 2004, Adrian was elected Secretary for the Association of Consulting Engineers NI holding the office until 2006, when he was elected treasurer until 2009.
Outside of the office, Adrian is a keen sportsman. As father to 6 boys he spends much of his free time watching them play a variety of local sports and playing music. He also coaches the minor football team for his local gaelic club.

A graduate of the Ulster University Zoe initially worked as an Environmental Research Assistant at BSRIA, before taking up the role of a mechanical engineer in a number of consultancy practices in both London and Belfast. In 2000 she joined ISD as a mechanical engineer, becoming a director in 2010. Zoe has a strong interest in sustainable design. In the recent past she was an accredited BREEAM Assessor and is currently an accredited low carbon consultant and energy assessor.
In her downtime Zoe shows dogs and is a keen musician playing the clarinet and saxophone.
Paul is a highly experienced Chartered Engineer in the field of electrical engineering. Following completion of his degree studies at Ulster University in 2005 he joined ISD as a graduate engineer and we were delighted to welcome him as a director in 2023. During his time with ISD he has delivered a broad spectrum of projects, building strong and effective relationships across the industry.
Outside the office he enjoys competition fly fishing and playing badminton.
Shaun graduated from the Ulster University in 2002 and began his career at a local consulting engineering firm as a mechanical engineer before moving to the Middle East in 2010 to work in the Oil & Gas industry. In 2016 he returned to Northern Ireland and joined ISD as a mechanical engineer. Shaun has a keen interest in computers. He is proficient in the use of Revit and leads ISD’s Building Information Modelling team.
Outside of work Shaun enjoys walking his dog in the local hills.
Aidan graduated from Ulster University in 2005 with a BEng (Hons) degree in Environmental Engineering and joined ISD as a graduate engineer. He is now a Senior Electrical Engineer within the Company responsible for delivering projects from inception to completion across a wide variety of sectors. An accomplished engineer, Aidan has a particular interest in architectural lighting.
During his spare time he enjoys keeping fit, taking part in a wide variety of sporting activities.
Jafar graduated from Ghousia College of Engineering, VTU Belgaum, India in 2016 and from Queen’s University in 2018 with a master’s degree in advanced mechanical engineering. He joined ISD in 2018 as a graduate mechanical engineer through the Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange Scheme. He is our in-house expert in thermal modelling using IES VE, allowing us to collaborate with the wider design team from the concept stage to benchmark various designs against carbon emissions, thermal comfort, overheating and daylighting.
In his spare time Jafar likes to participate in a variety of different activities including going to the gym, cycling and hiking. He is also a keen music fan.
BSc; MSc; Level 3 NVQ – Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Part 1 & Part 2)
David completed 6 years of study in the field of Architecture before deciding on a change of career. In 2014 he joined ISD as a trainee electrical engineer. He is now an experienced engineer delivering projects from inception to completion. His interest in sustainable design has led him into the area of thermal modelling. He is experienced in the use of various software packages such as Elmhurst and IES VE and is ISD’s inhouse specialist in the production of SAP and EPC calculations.
Outside of work, David is a keen supporter of Ulster Rugby & Larne FC.
Joao Pedro graduated from Federal University of Sao Joao del Rei in 2021 with a BEng (Hons) degree in Electrical Engineering and from Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais with an MBA degree in Industry 4.0 in 2022. Joao began his career as an Energy and Utilities intern at an Oil and Gas company in Brazil besides taking part in a traineeship programme where he had the opportunity to develop strong leadership and communication skills and a results-oriented mindset.
In his spare time Joao enjoys outdoor activities including walking and sightseeing.
Noureen joined ISD as a graduate engineer in 2023, having graduated from Ghousia College of Engineering, VTU, Belgaum, India with a BEng in Civil Engineering in 2019. Noureen uses AutoCAD and Revit software to prepare tender and preliminary designs, detailed drawings and 3D models for a wide variety of projects; she also utilises IES VE software for thermal modelling.
Outside work Noureen enjoys cooking, music and exploring new places.
James is a highly experienced Chartered Mechanical Building Services Engineer. He graduated from UMIST, Manchester in 1997 and joined ISD in September 2024. Throughout his career, He has delivered many large scale, complex projects as a design consultant, client technical advisor and design lead on design and build projects. James has a particular interest in decarbonisation and believes project success stems from good communication and collaboration with clients, design teams, contractors and manufacturers. James is particularly interested in developing early career engineers and mentoring them to chartered status.
A keen cyclist and hiker, James loves exploring our beautiful countryside. He recently completed a fitness challenge walking 540km and cycling over 1000km in a six week period.
Having been awarded a degree in Life & Chemical Sciences, Elaine initially worked in the field of analytical chemistry. In the early days of ISD’s formation she helped Stephen manage the finances before stepping away from the company to pursue other opportunities and bring up their two daughters. In 2012 she ‘officially’ re-joined ISD and is responsible for the company’s financials. She handles the day-to-day bookkeeping and accounting, provides financial reports for the company directors, monitors cashflow and ensures company compliance with tax and insurances. Elaine is also the focal point for all HR issues.
In her spare time Elaine enjoys walking and working on her allotment.
